Located in Rochester, NY and founded in 1916, G&H | GS Optics specializes in the custom design and manufacture of precision polymer optics for use in the biomedical, healthcare diagnostics, machine vision and analytical instrument markets, as well as military and civilian night-vision and visible-range sighting applications.

G&H|GS Optics LLC is adding a Mold Maker to our team. The Mold Maker supports the maintenance and introduction of molds to the production floor. Candidates will understand the proper handling of precision parts for installation into the mold, work closely with Process Technicians and Molding floor personnel by listening to concerns and develop strategies to address concerns. In doing so, they will provide support for tools in production. The Mold Maker will also participate in tool improvement discussions, implement approved changes and document changes on the tool log, and participate in tool design reviews along with reps from Molding and Engineering. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Mold Maker to work in the precision optics industry!

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares tools prior to installation into mold machines
  • Cleans molds, inserts vents as required
  • Performs inspection and preventive maintenance on tools
  • Reviews tools and discusses options for optimization
  • Assists program launch team in conducting new tool tryouts and other activities as scheduled
  • Fits components on new tools as required and help those who are using it to understand its characteristics in operation
  • Recommends incorporation of new technology where feasible and practical
  • Support process improvement initiatives and activities throughout the plant
  • Trouble shoot potential mold issues and communicate tooling concerns to tool room and molding department leads
  • Recommends repairs to tooling as needed and then repair damaged or worn tools to bring to an acceptable condition
  • Work with Quality Assurance with metrics and testing repairs
  • Documents tooling activities and repair histories and participate in root cause analysis and team problem solving activities
  • Support production and CNC department as needed
  • Working to comply with company Health, Safety and Environmental requirements

Skills/Experience/Education

  1. High school diploma, trade school and/or some college coursework is preferred
  2. Minimum 5 years of hands-on mold building and/or repair experience required
  3. Knowledge of tooling and machinery associated with tool/mold building
  4. Minimum 5 years’ experience with basic tool room machinery such as grinder, lathe, mill
  5. CNC experience preferred
  6. Plano polishing and welding is a plus
  7. Experience with SolidWorks, Master Cam, CNC programming
  8. MS Office and Outlook experience
  9. Must have good written and verbal communication skills
  10. Able to work independently and in a team environment
