Gooch & Housego is looking for a motivated and independent individual to maintain, administer and help modify as required, our EH&S policies and practice. The role is based in Cleveland, OH, working across the US Sites to establish a phased approach in assessing the current state and developing a culture of open engagement to drive improvement. This includes: overseeing compliance to all relevant environmental policies, programs and regulations, including the HAZMAT inventory and waste disposal; all relevant Occupational Health & Safety regulations, including the Sites’ IIPP; and where applicable the Sites’ ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems.

The role also covers working with their UK counterpart in rolling out Group wide process standardization and supporting Environmental projects such as Site based ISO14001 accreditations.

This is a matrix position: it works under corporate strategic direction across all US Sites for the EH&S responsibilities, whilst also having secondary reporting to the General Manager at Cleveland for local Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities as the site prime.

Job Responsibilities

  • Across G&H US Sites (6) in the US (OH, CA, NH, MA, VA):
    • With Site Operations Management, conduct regular/sufficient inspections of each Site operation & records to ensure/demonstrate compliance with Federal, State and Local EH&S regulations; OSHA requirements; and other Corporate EH&S polices.
    • Advise on best-practice for regular EH&S risk assessments to ensure a robust system is in place to monitor and help drive improvement.
    • Based on the inspections and risk assessment, develop appropriate corrective and preventive actions with Site Operations Team as appropriate.
    • Identify and quantify environmental improvement initiatives in support of emissions reduction in line with ISO 50001 – Energy Management.
    • Assess site-based staff competency levels and develop training plans to establish a baseline in support of further strengthening the site safety coordinators.
    • Develop training resources and incorporate appropriate materials within the company’s SharePoint site.
    • Support Site Operation Teams in preparing for the quarterly Executive EH&S reviews and participate in the quarterly reviews.
    • Liaising with UK counterpart to review and analyse trends, identification of potential improvement initiatives and fulfilling group wide reporting obligations.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Minimum BS Degree, specialization in Occupational Safety and Health, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in related field; Professional Certifications highly desirable (e.g. CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH).
  • Proven track record in introducing policies and working procedures in support of attaining a management system accreditation. Preferably both ISO45001 & ISO14001.
  • Lead or internal auditor trained and experienced in auditing to ISO45001:2018 & 14001:2015.
  • Solid practical experience managing HMBP & HMIS and demonstration of a lead OSHA role in a Light Manufacturing environment is a plus, ideally with multi-site responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership, influencing, communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to interpret and react to changes to applicable Regulations at Federal, State, and Local level.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of health, safety and environmental regulations, and concepts (OSHA/CalOSHA).
  • The ability to travel to other Sites within the US (est. ~25%).
