ICSO 2026 - International Conference on Space Optics

- | Hilton Sorrento Palace, Sorrento, Italy

G&H will be attending ICSO 2026, the International Conference on Space Optics, taking place from 12–16 October 2026 in Sorrento, Italy.

ICSO brings together the international space optics community to share the latest developments in optical technologies for space missions, from research and development through to qualification and flight experience. The 2026 conference will provide an important forum for mission specialists, optical engineers and technology experts to explore the next generation of lightwave technologies for space applications.

G&H is pleased to be attending ICSO 2026, the 16th International Conference on Space Optics, co-organised by ESA and CNES.

As a specialist photonics and optical technology partner, G&H supports demanding space, aerospace and defence applications where precision, reliability and performance are critical. Our expertise spans optical systems, precision optics, acousto-optics, fiber optics and advanced photonic technologies designed to meet challenging mission and environmental requirements.

Speaker Session: Optical Amplifiers for Optical Communication

When: Friday 16 October 2026 | 14:00–15:20 CEST (local time in Italy)

Four-Wave Mixing in 100W WDM Optical Fibre Amplifier for Tbps Communications

Join G&H’s Sharana Kariappa as she explores a key challenge in developing satellite-to-ground optical links targeting terabit-per-second (Tbps) data transmission: managing nonlinear effects in high-power optical fibre amplifiers.

Drawing on experimental observations of a 10-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) amplifier operating at 100 W output, the presentation investigates how four-wave mixing (FWM) generates unwanted signals and crosstalk that can compromise transmission quality, even over the short fibre lengths within an amplifier and its connection to a telescope.

The session will examine the implications for signal quality and transmission performance, alongside mitigation approaches including fibre length optimisation and channel spacing adjustments. Particular attention will be given to unequal channel spacing as a promising approach to suppressing FWM, offering practical design insights for future high-capacity free-space optical communications.

Global satellite communications, A digital rendering of the Earth from space, focusing on Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia and the Middle East. Bright lines and glowing nodes crisscross the globe, illustrating global data connectivity or communication networks. The illuminated paths suggest high-speed information exchange, with Europe appearing as a major hub. The image symbolizes global communication, networking infrastructure, or data transfer across continents.

ICSO 2026 will focus on the use of optical technologies across space missions, including topics such as imagers and radiometers, spectrometers, optical communications, space science instrumentation and advanced optical engineering for future missions.

Visitors to ICSO 2026 will have the opportunity to speak with the G&H team about our capabilities in precision optical design, manufacture and integration, and how we support customers developing high-performance photonics solutions for space and mission-critical environments.
