Target Designation and Laser Rangefinding

Target designation and laser rangefinding systems are essential to modern defence platforms, delivering fast, precise target acquisition and ranging when every millisecond and metre counts.

Target Designation & Laser Rangefinding Systems

Target designation and laser rangefinding systems are critical to modern defence platforms, enabling accurate target acquisition and ranging in environments where milliseconds and metres matter. These systems must deliver consistent optical performance under extreme temperature ranges, shock, vibration, and prolonged operational lifetimes, often exceeding decades of in-service use.

In addition to uncompromising accuracy, modern rangefinding and designation platforms face increasing pressure to reduce size, weight, and power (SWaP) while maintaining reliability and manufacturability at scale.

How We Work in Target Designation & Laser Rangefinding

G&H supports target designation and laser rangefinding applications through the design and manufacture of optical components, opto-mechanical assemblies, and integrated photonic subsystems engineered for harsh defence environments.

A key challenge in these systems is maintaining optical alignment and performance across wide temperature ranges while withstanding sustained shock and vibration. G&H applies established photonic packaging techniques, precision alignment methods, and rigorous process control to ensure stable operation throughout the system lifetime.

For laser rangefinding applications, compact solid-state laser transmitters must combine high peak power, eye-safe operation, and long-term reliability within tightly constrained mechanical envelopes. Drawing on manufacturing approaches originally developed for high-reliability telecoms photonics, G&H delivers ruggedised laser transmitter modules and optical assemblies suitable for long-life defence platforms.

Reducing SWaP without compromising performance is a recurring requirement across these programmes. Our experience working at both component and subsystem level enables efficient integration, helping customers transition advanced laser designs into deployment-ready hardware.

Application Example

G&H’s capabilities in high-reliability photonic manufacturing have been applied in laser rangefinder programmes for defence sensor systems developed by Thales. In this application, G&H manufactured compact diode-pumped solid-state laser transmitter hardware to a customer-patented design, supporting reliable operation in harsh environments and long-term in-service use.

The programme has been publicly recognised through an innovation award from the Institute of Physics, and the resulting systems are deployed on armoured vehicle platforms including Boxer and the Challenger 3.
