50 W Optical Fiber Amplifier
A high-power C-band fiber amplifier developed for satellite uplinks, optical ground stations and demanding free-space optical communications.

| 9:30–10:00 AM PST | Moscone Center, San Francisco, USA
Join Dr. Stratos Kehayas, President of G&H Photonics, at SPIE Photonics West 2027 for his invited presentation, “Bridging earth and space: the expanding role of optical amplifiers”
The talk will explore how optical amplifiers have evolved from enabling global submarine cable networks and long-haul terrestrial communications to supporting laser-based satellite connectivity. Stratos will review the journey of qualifying 1550 nm optical amplifiers for space and discuss advances in miniaturization and power scaling for inter-satellite links, optical data relay systems, optical feeder links and airborne laser communications.
Drawing on lessons from low Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO) development programs, the presentation will examine the engineering challenges of delivering reliable optical amplification throughout a space mission.
Topics will include radiation-induced degradation, thermal-vacuum operation, launch vibration and shock, and nonlinear effects, alongside qualification methodologies and key failure mechanisms. From ultra-low-noise preamplifiers to high-power boosters, discover how optical amplifier development is supporting the performance requirements of next-generation laser communication terminals.
