Medical Consumables & Polymer Optics Development

Polymer optics, A woman in a blue lab coat is placing a metal tray filled with small black optical components into a transparent drying or cleanroom chamber. She is working in a clean manufacturing environment, with a blue tool board holding various metal templates or fixtures in the background. A wall calendar is partially visible on the right side of the image, adding context to the workspace

Precision-Molded Consumables that Power Life Science Innovation

At G&H | GS Optics, we design and produce custom medical consumables and polymer optics that enable performance, reliability, and scalability in diagnostic and analytical devices. From disposable cartridges and reagent packs to optical consumables for imaging and detection, our solutions are engineered for manufacturability and cost-effective scale-up.

Our Rochester, NY facility has more than a century of precision manufacturing heritage, evolving from early polymer-forming expertise to today’s world-class production of medical-grade plastic optics and single-use components.

End-to-End Development for Polymer-Based Consumables

We provide complete development support - from concept design and feasibility through high-volume molding and assembly - ensuring that each part meets functional, optical, and regulatory requirements.

Our Capabilities Include:

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM) – early evaluation of part geometry, materials, and tolerances to de-risk production.
  • Injection & Compression Molding – automated presses (30 – 220 tons) producing components from 3 mm – 150 mm with tight process control.
  • Optical & Mechanical Design – lenses, microlens arrays, cuvettes, and light guides tailored for diagnostic and life-science systems.
  • Diamond Turning & Tooling – rapid prototyping and mold fabrication with sub-micron precision.
  • Thin-Film Coatings – anti-reflective, reflective, and bandpass coatings for enhanced optical performance.
  • Clean-Room Assembly & Packaging – ISO Class 7 facilities for sterile or contamination-sensitive products.

Advanced Materials and Quality Assurance

Our consumables are manufactured from medical-grade polymers including acrylic (PMMA), polycarbonate, and cyclic olefin polymer (COP/COC) to balance optical clarity, impact resistance, and low birefringence.

Quality is built into every stage through our ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certified systems, validated using Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) protocols.

Precision metrology - Zygo interferometry, Zeiss CMM, and Bruker 3D optical microscopy - ensures each production run meets specification.

Applications

Our polymer consumables support a wide range of devices and platforms:

  • In-vitro diagnostics and lab automation
  • Optical detection and imaging cartridges
  • Microfluidic and flow-cell assemblies
  • Illumination and light-guiding components
  • Point-of-care testing consumables
