Connecting Torbay’s technology community at Riviera Connect

G&H attended the Riviera Connect Exhibition at Torquay’s Riviera International Centre as part of the Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster, joining businesses, educators and industry leaders to showcase the strength of the region’s technology sector.

Sharana Kariappa and Dominic Hartt represented G&H on the stand, sharing our capabilities and discussing our involvement in the local high-tech community. The exhibition provided an opportunity to build connections and highlight the engineering and advanced manufacturing expertise found across South Devon.

Tim Matthews, NPI Product Line Director at G&H and a Director of the Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster, also joined the cluster’s panel discussion. During the session, he highlighted G&H’s commitment to apprenticeships, skills development and continued growth at our Torquay site, alongside the importance of supporting the next generation of engineering and manufacturing talent.

From Torquay to the ocean floor and outer space

Our contribution to the region is also explored in the latest edition of Torbay Tomorrow. Written by Jim Parker, the feature, “From the depths of the ocean to the edge of outer space”, introduces the technologies and people behind G&H’s Torquay operations.

Home to more than 250 people, the site brings together scientists, engineers, production specialists and colleagues across quality, operations and other functions. Their combined expertise supports photonics applications ranging from subsea communications and satellite links to medical imaging and semiconductor manufacturing.

The feature highlights our long-standing contribution to subsea telecommunications, where optical components must operate reliably in exceptionally demanding environments. It also explores G&H’s role in the LUCAS laser communication system, developed by NEC Corporation for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). In 2026, JAXA recognised G&H’s contribution to the system’s development and successful operation with a Letter of Appreciation.

Photonics that makes a difference in everyday life

Although many of these technologies operate out of sight, their impact is close to home. The Torbay Tomorrow feature explains how photonics manufactured in Torquay contributes to the communications, healthcare and digital technologies people depend on.

One example is optical coherence tomography, or OCT, which uses light to produce detailed images of structures within the body. Widely associated with eye examinations, the technology also supports cardiovascular imaging. G&H’s Torquay operations manufacture systems used in cardiovascular OCT, enabling detailed assessment before, during and after stent implantation.

Our fiber optic technologies also support advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. These applications rely on precision and consistent performance to help produce the chips used in computers, smartphones, vehicles and other devices. Across these different markets, the expertise of our Torquay teams helps translate photonics research into practical technology.

Recognising the people behind the innovation

The magazine places G&H’s people at the heart of the story, recognising that successful technology depends on expertise throughout its development and manufacture. Research, optical design, precision assembly, testing and quality assurance all contribute to products that perform reliably in their intended environments.

For three consecutive years, colleagues from G&H Torquay have been selected for Electro Optics’ Photonics100, which recognises individuals making significant contributions to the photonics industry. The feature celebrates Matthew Welch, former Chief Engineer for Fibre Optic Systems; Optical Design Engineer Dr Stuart MacFarquhar; and Production Operator Karen Hall, recognised in 2026.

Their achievements demonstrate the breadth of talent within the site. Karen’s contribution to the LUCAS programme included precision fiber splicing, soldering and assembly of critical modules. Stuart’s optical design expertise has supported complex applications including space communications, while Matthew’s work helped advance G&H’s fiber optic systems and technologies.

Building the next generation of engineering talent

Developing that expertise for the future is central to G&H’s role in Torbay. As Tim highlighted at Riviera Connect, apprenticeships and skills development help create routes into engineering and manufacturing while supporting the continued growth of our Torquay operations.

The magazine explores how careers can develop within G&H, from specialist technical roles to site and international leadership. It also highlights our engagement with schools and initiatives such as Big Bang South West, helping young people understand what engineering careers involve and discover opportunities available locally.

Working alongside organisations including the EPIC Centre and Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster helps strengthen these connections between education, industry and the wider community. For someone beginning their career in Torbay, that could mean learning precision manufacturing skills, working alongside research scientists, or contributing to technology destined for space. Our participation in Riviera Connect and Torbay Tomorrow reflects a shared ambition to make those opportunities more visible.
