The Business Development Manager is responsible for driving sales and business growth in new and existing customers and market verticals within the Photonics Division of Gooch & Housego that specializes in manufacturing best-in-class acousto-optic, electro-optic and fiber-optic components and OEM sub-systems.

The successful candidate will manage and grow new and existing key accounts, create and drive business development plans, successfully expand our market share and execute on new design wins in customers new platforms and NPI.


  • Drive profitable revenue growth in the US west coast territory
  • Responsible for managing and growing key accounts
  • Scout, drive and close on new design wins in new customers or new platform in existing accounts
  • Contribute to the division’s strategic commercial market plan
  • Seed long term business growth in new areas, leveraging G&H’s technology expertise and intercepting technology and market trends.
  • Manage, own and grow opportunity funnel
  • Champion customer interaction, deliver strategic presentations and drive long-term collaboration with major customers.
  • Close on new opportunities by working to the internal commercial processes and coordinating with internal functions including Engineering, Operations and Product Management.
  • Plan and manage customer visits to solidify business relationships, determine specific customer needs, and understand application and business requirements.
  • Initiate, direct, and participate in sales presentations, trade exhibits, product demonstrations, and other activities designed to identify current or potential customer needs and expectations.
  • Follow internal reporting procedures and report ad-hoc to senior management and executives of G&H.

Location & travel

  • Bay Area
  • 50% travel expected

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, (or equivalent laser/photonics experience)
  • Minimum of 10 years related sales experience within the industry
  • Proven track record in growing market share, expanding into new areas and achieving design ins
  • Proven working knowledge of the use of photonic devices in lasers and applications
  • Ability to sell technical capabilities, ideas and manage commercial negotiations
  • Motivated team player with a positive attitude who can work independently
  • Ability to communicate in an appropriate manner with contacts at all levels within G&H and the customer’s organization.
  • Good organizational, time management and presentation skills.
  • Experience with CRM systems (Salesforce or MS Dynamics)
