DESCRIPTION

The Principal Hardware Systems Engineer is a key role for expanding our footprint for our OEM photonics enabled medical and life science devices within the USA. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the inception of a growing R&D team working in partnership with our world class team in the UK. You will take responsibility for the electronics and firmware design on a given project, working as part of the front-end engineering team in the US. As part of our sub-contract design team and interfacing with our clients you will be exposed to a wide variety of projects enabling a broad level of experience to be obtained. You will take designs through from concept to production ensuring adherence to regulatory and system requirements. In addition to design and leadership activities you will provide technical support to the Business development team, helping assess the feasibility and work content of prospective new projects. You will report into Project Managers, Chief Engineer and the R&D Director.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take responsibility for the Electronics and Firmware design of projects
  • Hands on design implementation
  • Determine requirements in collaboration with clients
  • Follow the New Product development plan from concept through to production, liaising with departments as required
  • Work as part of a multi-national cross disciplinary team
  • Tutor and mentor more junior engineers
  • Keep abreast of technology, regulations and best practice
  • Carryout simulation and breadboarding of ideas, generation of test harnesses etc.
  • Assist in the build and test of prototypes
  • Some project management
  • Provide technical assistance to the Business Development team
  • Work within the ISO 9001/ISO 13485 framework

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Physics or Computer Science Engineering or related field
  • Desired: Masters or PhD in Electronics, Physics or Computer Science Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years of hands-on design experience ideally within an R&D department or design consultancy
  • Digital, FPGA, Analogue design experience
  • Embedded Programming Experience in ‘C’, VHDL,
  • C++, .net, C#, java, Python, or algorithm development an advantage
  • Knowledge of Photonics desirable
  • Can do attitude, inquisitive, willing to take on tasks as deemed necessary for the project. Ability to client face, good presentation and communication skills
  • Willing to help and evolve the R&D department and build an expert team
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, strive for right first time, backed up by calculation and simulation

Due to US export control laws, must be a US citizen, permanent resident or have protected status

Location & travel

This position will be based out of our Rochester, NY site, on a hybrid work arrangement basis

10% travel expected
