This position is based in our Boston, MA facility and will focus on the design and development of new fiber-based components and modules with applications primarily in Aerospace & Defence (A&D) sector with additional target markets in industrial, telecommunications, and bio-photonics areas. You will be working with colleagues across the business, including product management and business development, to lead the development of new fiber optic products. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team developing cutting-edge products for applications in air/space-born navigation systems, aerospace sensors, satellite communications, industrial sensing, and biomedical imaging.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for design and development of fiber optic components and modules including DFBs, pump lasers, DBR lasers, photo-detectors, direct modulated lasers, fused couplers, planar optical devices, modules, and other passive and active fiber-based products.

Lead New Product Development activities by delivering robust designs with a full understanding of product performance through modelling and verification testing.

Support the business technology development strategies and presales activities on fiber optic components and modules. Assist with requirements capture and specification definition, sensitivity analysis, and reliability analysis.

Work with Business Development and Engineering teams to support new opportunities and generate solutions for customers.

Interface with our Fiber Optic Commercial and Manufacturing teams, ensuring new products developed are commercially viable and manufacturable, respectively.

Drive products from design to prototyping and up to environmental qualification following internal or customer-driven NPI requirements.

Support the Manufacturing Engineering team in transferring new products into production.

Generate engineering reports and white papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals or conferences to disseminate R&D activities performed.

Travel expected to be <5% of the time.

Skills & Experience:

Essential

Master’s degree in Engineering or Science (Physics, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical) or equivalent, PhD preferred.

In-depth understanding of solid-state lasers and laser components.

Proven ability in both laser systems analytical modelling and laboratory testing.

Experience with laser simulations, including optical gain and loss, electrical carriers, mode confinement, etc.

Good knowledge of photonic components and sub-systems from design and test.

In-depth knowledge of light propagation in optical waveguides.

Working knowledge of laser test equipment and measurement methods.

Knowledge of laser safety protocols and NoHD calculations.

In-depth knowledge of fiber optic technology and its applications in A&D, Life Sciences, and Industrial market sectors.

Capable of working across different disciplines and functions within the business, understanding group objectives and core competencies of other parts of the business.

Ability to work and communicate effectively with all technical professionals at all levels.

Must have excellent communication skills, technical writing, and interpersonal skills, and customer interface experience.

Desired

PhD in Optics, Photonics or Lasers.

Experience in numerical simulation tools for light propagation, optical waveguiding, and coupling.

Experience with active component design and development.

Experience with III-V integration is preferred.

Understanding of Telcordia, MIL and/or ECSS/ECSS qualification standards.
