At the Speed of Life: Kick-starting Biotech Manufacturing at the G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences in the United States

Events

“What a great turnout for this launch,” remarked Brandon Johnson, Founder & Managing Partner at Vectis, a consultancy firm supporting innovators in healthcare manufacturing. He is one of the 50+ distinguished guests that attended the Grand Opening of the G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences in Rochester, New York, an event that drew leaders from academia, governmental institutions, and medtech industry partners. “I thought the G&H Innovation Hub opening was fantastic. It brought folks together to highlight the thriving ecosystem for startups and mature companies that catalyze a product-to-market approach with G&H and other Rochester-based community members.”

When asked about key takeaways from the event, Brandon mentioned that “I met so many interesting people who I saw opportunities to work with, and I learned far more than I thought possible about what's happening in Rochester. I thought I had a sense of the status quo, but the G&H event brought together such a diverse crowd of industry leaders, I was almost overwhelmed! The team at G&H really knows their stuff and it was very exciting to see the new purpose-built space ready to design and build the medical devices of tomorrow. Everything is laid out with such care and clarity of vision for the work that is being done there. I can't wait to see the next chapter!” This is the energy with which the G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences opened its doors for business.

Why Innovation Hubs Fail – and Why G&H’s Won’t

Launching a new Innovation Hub is always an ambitious plan. To make sure our novel G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences succeeds, we have adopted a strategic growth layout that goes beyond mere launch hype.

As journalist Ben Armstrong wrote in the Boston Review, “The past several decades have seen a proliferation of institutions dedicated to innovation and economic development. …. What often distinguishes the successful regions are the actors driving local economic development. An ecosystem’s activities—and its effectiveness—depend on who leads, and how.”

That sentiment echoed throughout the G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences launch. Winthrop Thurlow, Executive Director at LifeSciencesNY, emphasized: “Moving from the lab to production is a critical challenge for innovators in the life sciences. Researchers and entrepreneurs require the support of technical experts to help them bring their healthcare products to market, as well as sturdy leadership. The G&H Innovation Hub meets this challenge by providing the tools, knowledge and resources innovators seek. This facility brings world-class expertise and production capabilities to the North American market.”

Establishing a Biotech Foothold in Rochester, NY

In just 18 months, G&H moved from concept to grand opening, officially inaugurating the Innovation Hub for Life Sciences on May 1st, 2025 in Rochester, New York, US. This state-of-the-art facility was designed to accelerate the development and delivery of advanced medical technologies in the United States – the world’s largest life sciences market.

The facility builds upon G&H’s established expertise through its Center of Excellence for Life Sciences in Ashford, United Kingdom. Even more, the G&H Innovation Hub for Life Sciences breaks new ground: it uniquely integrates optics and photonics capabilities into life sciences manufacturing – offering clients expanded portfolio options and unmatched solution flexibility.

Blending Optical Expertise with Life Sciences

Rochester was a natural choice. The city is widely regarded as the birthplace of North American optics and photonics, making it a strategic complement to G&H’s existing operations – including polymer optics prototyping and production at G&H | GS Optics. At the same time, the decision to establish a medtech R&D center in a non-traditional space like Rochester opens new doors. It fosters community engagement and taps into undiscovered regional talent for medtech manufacturing.

Yvette Pagano, Executive Director of APOMA, the working group of the top US optics manufacturers, commented: “The event was not only beautifully organized, but also a powerful demonstration of G&H’s commitment to American manufacturing and investing in the future of downtown Rochester, NY. It was inspiring to see such energy and dedication focused on both innovation and community impact, bridging the gap between optics and life sciences. I’m excited to have G&H as a member of APOMA and look forward to future opportunities to collaborate on this front.”

We are Officially Open – and Ready for What’s Next

Medical equipment is foundational to modern healthcare. At G&H, we recognize that innovation means more than ideas – it means execution at scale.

The life sciences market in North America is ready for what G&H has to offer through this strategic expansion. Joseph Walish, PhD, Chief Product Officer of C2Sense, thinks so as well after attending the Grand Opening: “It was great to see the new G&H Innovation Hub. The classic brick façade coupled with the updated interior was very fitting given G&H's solid manufacturing abilities coupled with their new and innovative R&D group. Throughout the tour and meetings, it was great to see the synergy between these two activities showcased in the products that were on display. Additionally, it was a pleasure meeting the G&H personnel face-to-face at the event to discuss the HALO® Reader product and our future plans.”

With the new Rochester-based Innovation Hub for Life Sciences and decades of medtech manufacturing experience in the UK, we’re ready to turn tomorrow’s biotech innovation ideas into today’s successes: through expertise, strategy, and effective work.
