Germanium Prisms
High-precision Germanium prisms for infrared beam steering, dispersion, and imaging applications in aerospace, defense, and spectroscopy systems.
Full Product DescriptionProduct description
G&H Germanium prisms are engineered for optimal performance in mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) systems. Manufactured from high-purity monocrystalline Germanium, these prisms offer excellent IR transmission (2–14 µm), a high refractive index (~4.0 at 10.6 µm), and superb thermal and chemical stability.
Germanium’s high dispersion in the infrared spectrum makes it suitable for spectroscopic separation, beam deviation, and reflective applications. Available in a range of geometries—including right-angle, penta, and wedge prisms—G&H Germanium prisms can be coated with AR or DLC layers for improved transmission and durability in harsh environments.
Whether for passive thermal imaging, active IR beam manipulation, or sensor integration, our prisms deliver precision and reliability in the most demanding applications.
Key features
- Excellent Infrared Transmission: Transmits efficiently from 2 µm to 14 µm. Ideal for MWIR (3–5 µm) and LWIR (8–12 µm) applications
- High Refractive Index (~4.0 at 10.6 µm): Enables compact system designs and sharp beam deviation. Reduces the size of prism-based IR systems
- High Dispersion in the IR: Suitable for spectroscopic separation and beam steering
- Thermal and Chemical Stability: Operates in harsh environments, including aerospace and defense. Resistant to thermal shock and many chemicals
- Low Optical Absorption in the IR: Allows for high-performance use in laser and imaging systems
- Available in Various Geometries: Right-angle, wedge, penta, and custom prisms. Machinable for complex optical path control
- Coating Compatibility: Supports AR (Anti-Reflective) coatings for IR transmission. DLC coatings available for enhanced environmental protection
- Mechanical Robustness: Hard surface (Knoop hardness ~780) provides resistance to scratching. Dense material (5.33 g/cm³) for solid structural integration
- Precision Angular Tolerances: Typically available with <3 arcmin tolerances for beam alignment applications
